UV Absorbers UV-328

UV-328 is a highly efficient benzotriazole UV absorber, primarily used to prevent discoloration and degradation of materials such as plastics and coatings under sunlight/UV exposure

UV 328 has an excellent UV absorption, low initial color, good compatibility for a variety of material, and also with a good solubility and low volatile for the plasticizer and monomer.

Plastics Industry: Used in polyolefins (especially polyethylene), polyesters, styrene polymers, polyamides, polycarbonates, etc.

Automotive Industry: Used in automotive paints, coatings, sealants, liquid crystal panels, instrument panels, as well as interior and exterior trim parts.

Food Packaging: Used in non-food contact layers of plastics, printing inks, and adhesives.

Industrial Coatings: Automotive coatings, engineering machinery coatings, rail transit coatings, and heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings for large steel structures.

Others: Triacetyl cellulose (TAC) polarizing films, photographic paper, etc.

Product Features: Effectively absorbs UV radiation in the 270–340 nm range, exhibits good compatibility with resins, low thermal volatility, and good wash resistance.

Regulatory Status (Stockholm Convention)

Background: The Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC), in its decision POPRC-16/3, confirmed that UV-328 meets the screening criteria set out in Annex D of the Convention.

Conference of the Parties (COP) Decision: In May 2023, the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-11) to the Stockholm Convention adopted decision SC-11/11, listing UV-328 in Annex A of the Convention (Elimination category).

Control Measures: Listing in Annex A means that Parties are required to prohibit or eliminate the production and use of UV-328.

Specific Exemptions (Allowed Transitional Periods):

Based on discussions at COP-11, the following applications are granted a 5-year specific exemption period (calculated from the entry into force of the amendment):

Motor vehicles

Mechanical separators in blood collection tubes

Industrial coating applications (automotive coatings, engineering machinery coatings, rail transit coatings, heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings for large steel structures)

Triacetyl cellulose (TAC) films for polarizing films

Photographic paper

Additionally, for articles already in use before the expiry of the exemption period, their replacement parts and repairs may continue until the end of the service life of those articles or until 2044, whichever is earlier.
