I. What Are Fluorescent Whitening Agents?

According to the national standard GB/T6687-2006 Glossary of Dye Terms, a fluorescent whitening agent is a colorless fluorescent dye. Under ultraviolet light, it emits blue or violet visible light. This blue-violet light optically complements the yellowish tone inherent in the substrate, thereby significantly enhancing the visual whiteness and brightness of the item.

In simple terms, fluorescent whitening agents are not traditional "dyes" or "bleaches." They do not undergo chemical reactions with the substrate. Instead, through optical color compensation, they make white or light-colored items (such as textiles, plastics, paper, detergents, and soaps) appear whiter, brighter, and more vivid. This is why they are also referred to as "optical brighteners" or "white fluorescent dyes."


II. On the Safety of Fluorescent Whitening Agents

1. Authoritative International Research Findings

Since the 1950s and 1960s, toxicologists and industry organizations in Europe, the United States, and Japan-including the European Chemical Industry Council, the European Soap and Detergent Association, Japan's National Institute of Health Sciences, and the Japanese Soap and Detergent Association-have conducted systematic and in-depth toxicological studies on fluorescent whitening agents. The research results demonstrate that fluorescent whitening agents do not exhibit skin sensitization, phototoxicity, oral toxicity, dermal toxicity, reproductive toxicity, mutagenicity, or carcinogenicity. Each conclusion is supported by rigorous experimental methodologies, extensive data, and stringent evaluation criteria.

2. Domestic Authoritative Certifications

In August 2011, the China Cleaning Industry Association held an "Expert-Media Meeting on the Safety of Fluorescent Whitening Agents in Detergents" in Beijing. Attending authoritative experts explicitly concluded: "Laundry detergents containing fluorescent whitening agents are safe for both the human body and the environment."

The Pesticide Safety Evaluation and Supervision Inspection Center of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry conducted toxicity tests on fluorescent whitening agent CBS-X (a distyrylbiphenyl type). The results confirmed that, at the given dosage, the fluorescent whitening agent is of low toxicity and non-irritating.

3. Stringent National Industry Standards

China's industry standard for fluorescent whitening agents in detergents, Fluorescent Whitening Agents for Detergents (QB/T2953-2008), was recently revised and officially came into effect on November 1, 2023. This standard clearly stipulates the terminology, classification, technical requirements, test methods, and inspection rules for fluorescent whitening agents used in detergents, providing institutional safeguards for product compliance and safety.


III. Why Are Fluorescent Whitening Agents Added to Detergent Products?

In daily chemical products such as soaps, liquid detergents, and laundry powders, the moderate addition of fluorescent whitening agents serves the following main purposes:

Improving product appearance: Enhancing the whiteness of powder or soap bodies, making the product look purer and more aesthetically pleasing;

Enhancing washing performance: Making laundered clothes appear brighter and more vibrant, meeting consumers' visual expectations of "cleanliness";

Elevating product quality: Boosting market competitiveness through improved appearance and performance.
